Auction Idea

It occurs to me that if I offered as a prize in the juvenile diabetes auction "Your published book as the topic of discussion in Evil Editor's September Book Chat," it might raise a few bucks. It would probably be one of the one-day auctions.

However, it also occurs to me that it would annoy me to spend money to get my book featured only to have very few people read the book and show up. If the book were an unknown quantity, how many of you would be willing to get it and read it? I don't want to declare that many people will participate and more will read the chat transcript and pick up the book if the chat makes it sound good, only to be proven a liar.

This almost certainly would ensure that the author would show up, if nothing else.

Sure, why not? I would consider it an experiment in literature, an assignment from Sister Mary Matins and Mother Compline. Just don't let anyone bring wooden rulers.

Sounds like a good idea.

I would participate, God willing and the creek don't rise. I'm just trying to think of something else that would be an added inducement so you aren't totally at the mercy of the minions. Of course, there are a few minions who would probably like you at their mercy, but Robin shall remain nameless.

Maybe that and some kind of inclusion in a future EE book. Include part of the discussion or something.

It would depend on if they had it at the library. I'm always up for a discussion, but can't afford much in the way of, well, anything.

I'd be there.

Um, that magic seven figure number is getting really close.

I need to go into your other blog and look that list over.

No.

Blast, I knew I should have sent the gnomes to nap EE so the blog would get quiet for a while.

I'm pretty sure I guessed June.

I think the discussion would be fine. No need to add more work if you don't have to.

Looking back at the dates in the other place, I am so sad WO's socks are gone. I may go buy some striped socks just to console myself.

Nice idea, I'd like to support it.

Speaking honestly, if it's a print book that can ship internationally, yes, definitely in. If it's an e-book, though, I'm not sure I'd actually read it.

Oh. That was me, that anon. Forgot to sign in.

I'd get it and read it. We're back in June, so I'm looking forward to participating in the book chats then.

I also like the idea of supporting authors who are part of this community.

In principle I have no objection--I read unknown quantities all the time over at GUD.

The question is whether I'll be able to get the book at all, and secondly whether I'll be able to afford the book. I can give you odds it won't be in the library, whatever it is :D.

If it were a really bad book, we could have enormous fun with it. But that's assuming we'd buy and read it. To be honest, I have a hard time reading a book out of the SF/fantasy genre, so that would be the only one I'd likely participate in.

I think if the Author had donated an appropriate sum for the opportunity, we'd have to play nice with her/him.

Evil Editor said...

Yes, most of the auction items are priced pretty high, but if a dozen of us buying her book will help induce an author to fork over a hundred or more, we can feel like we're part of that contribution.

I'd buy it and read it. Especially since I can't afford to be that author, but I can afford to chip in my 2 cents, as it were.

So I can't have anything from the auction, but I can have a book. Hmm.

I wish they would fix the one day auctions. So many of them seem to be broken.

Evil Editor said...

Broken how? You can bid on them only on the one day they're active.

Julie Weathers said...

A couple were up last night that had already started the countdown, but I couldn't get the bid to activate.

Might have been me.
